On Aug.15, 2005, Dongtai, in east China’s Jiangsu Province, was granted the title of China Cocoon and Silk Manufacturing Base by China Silk Association and then became the only region that has been granted this title in China.

Dongtai is famous for its cocoon and silk production that was introduced in the 1960s. The cocoon and raw silk outputs rose at an annual growth of 15 per cent for the past consecutive three years. Till now, the areas under mulberry totaled 130000mus, the annual fresh cocoon output reached 17500 tons. Fine quality silk yarn output accounts for 10 per cent of total national output. The local silkworm breeders earned an income of 0.36 billion yuan from selling cocoons.

Dongtai has become one of the most successful models in terms of developing sericulture and silk. There are about 100000 people that engage in silk industry. In Dongtai, there are 12 silk reeling factories with a 2600 tons silk yarn reeling capacity and 360 sets of silk fabric weaving equipments with a six thousand meter weaving capacity.

Silk industry has become one of the most successful and gainful industries in the region. However, there is still a potential to develop silk. A more ambitious project has now been launched. According to the project, by the end of 2008, areas under mulberry will reach 150000mus, total output 20000 tons, and silk yarn 3000 tons.
