Nanchong is a main silk producing city in west China. Price hikes and exceptional surcharges are outweighing local silk sector’s cost pressure. According to Nanchong Daily, about 30-40 per cent of local silk weaving machines have stopped production after the Lunar new year, in response to the high cost.

In Meiya Silk Weaving Mill, only 50 per cent of product lines are operating. Its silk fabric output has dropped to 100,000 meters from the original 300,000 meters every month. If raw silk price continues to climb, the mill would have to consider further production curtailment in April, said Meiya’s CEO.
