Zhejiang can satisfy the silkworm egg demand of next spring through local production as well as exchange in the province and purchase from other regions, which is learnt from Zhejiang agricultural sector. Till now, the silkworm egg supply and demand has been inclined to balance.

Influenced by bad weather during the autumn period, the silkworm egg production target hasn’t been fulfilled, the administrative silkworm department said. 470000 packets of eggs have been produced around the province and only accounted for 70 pct of planned output volumet.

In addition, farmers’ enthusiasm in planting mulberry saplings and breeding silkworms has been stimulated significantly due to the hiked cocoon purchase price of this year, which inevitably led to further enlarged egg demand next year. It is expected that the demand of silkworm eggs for the coming spring is over 880000 packets. However, the available supply only totaled 800000 packets including 330000 packets produced during previous years and 470000 packets produced in this autumn. Then the gap once reached 80000 packets.

With the supply and demand imbalance in sight, the administrative department predicted such situation early in September and has made great preparations for the supply. The department exchanged 60000 packets from Shaoxing to Jiaxing-Huzhou region and purchased 89000 packets from other provinces. As a result, the administrative department has bridged the gap.

Meantime, the department said that one packet contains over 25000 eggs according to local regulations. All silkworm eggs are known to be cold stored.
