China's Ministry of Commerce has recently launched the project to move the sericulture sector from the east to the west, according to a national meeting on cocoon silk held recently. China will establish a group of state-level quality mulberry silk bases in the central and western regions so as to upgrade the country's competitive edge on the international silk market.

Huang Hai, assistant minister of the Ministry of Commerce, said that the country's eastern region is the traditional mulberry silk production base, but with the development of local economy, the reduction of land resources and the rising of labor cost, the sericulture sector in the east has lost its advantages and is on a downward trend.

In contrast, the sericulture sector has witnessed rapid development in the central and west regions in recent years. In Guangxi, mulberry fields totaled 93,440 hectares with silkworm cocoon output reaching 140,300 tons in 2005, ranking first in the country.
