Zhejiang, called as Silk Home, has been the top silk export province in recent years. But after three consecutive years of substantial export growth, Zhejiang silk export has encountered cold shock since this year. For the first eight months 2006, Zhejiang exported 44.82 million meters of silk, down by 27.8% year-on-year.

According to statistics from Ningbo Customs, the booms and slumps in domestic raw silk price, imposition of anti-dumping taxes on silk fabric by India authorities and the low-added value of Zhejiang export products directly led to the sharp decline of Zhejiang silk export this year.

It’s reported that India government has made a preliminary finding on silk fabric anti-dumping. Unfortunately, China’s silk enterprises including Zhejiang Cathaya were imposed high anti-dumping duties from 57.42%to115.74%. The export to India, Zhejiang’s largest silk export market, dropped by 37.6% from January to August.

Meanwhile, Zhejiang’s silk industry faces the sharp ups and downs in cocoon and silk prices. We have witnessed that filature silk price climbed from 170,000 yuan/ton in the second half of last year to 348,000 yuan/ton in early March of this year.

Under the situation of rising international trade friction, various contradictions will become more prominent in Zhejiang textile and silk export. Therefore, Zhejiang silk enterprises must be prepared to cope with it, to open up new international markets actively; to enhance product quality and grade and to increase export at the same time.
