According to a report from Guangxi Agricultural Administration, till March 31th, newly-planted area under mulberry has reached 200,000 mus; the distribution volume of silkworm seeds climbed 44.39 percent over same period last year to 839,000 boxes. Among this, Nanning ranks No. 1 with a distribution volume of 250,000 boxes, accounting for 29.89 percent of Guangxi’s total distribution volume, followed by Laibing and Hechi.
Cold weather during in early April has some impact on the silkworm growing and postpones fresh cocoon crop time, however, little effect on yield. The first batch of cocoons is harvested now in south Guangxi, and cocoon crop in the region is expected to come in large quantities around the end of April. Cocoon and silk prices dropped continuously since the end of last year. Currently cocoons ( stockpiles last year) price around 51,000 yuan per ton and raw silk prices around 183,000 per ton. In Guangdong province small quantities of cocoons has cropped at the price from 13 yuan to 16 yuan per kg. The report estimates the purchasing price of fresh cocoons in Guangxi won’t fall below such level.
