Jiangsu province distributed 1.39 million boxes of silkworm eggs, almost same as last spring. Among this, Nantong’s s distribution volume rose by 8.4 percent above last spring to 610 thousand boxes. Yancheng’s distribution volume rose by 10.7 percent above last spring to 355 thousand boxes.
The climate conditions this spring didn’t favor the silkworm growing in the province. Major cocoon production regions experienced late frost damage during late March to early April, which caused silkworm egg distribution time slightly later than normal years; Higher temperature( 2.5℃ above normal) with less rainfall ( 30% below normal)during silkworm growing period and unfavorable climate treatments during silkworm mounting period reduced cocoon yield per box by 10-20 percent, oven dry weight is 9.8g. It’s estimated that the crop yield per box is around 40kg in the province wide.
Jiangsu Price Administration set the guiding purchase price for spring fresh cocoon to be 950 yuan per 50kg, with price fluctuation no more than 15%. The actual average purchase price is estimated to be 1050 yuan per 50kg in the province( 1030 yuan for Wujiang, 1100 yuan for Nantong and Yancheng, 900 yuan for Suqian, 1050 yuan for Huaiyin).
