Famous for its December silk fairs, Khon Kaen is one of most important cities and Thailand fourth largest.
Khon Kaen Silk Fair & Phuk Sieo Festival Thailand has always been famous for its smooth lustrous silk. Khon Kaen is one of the best silk production areas in the Kingdom. Not surprisingly, Khon Kaen is the venue of a fair to promote silk weaving and sericulture industry.
Adding to an already impressive list of exciting attractions in the city, Khon Kaen further organizes the colourful Silk Fair for 10 days every year to celebrate the traditional cultivation of mulberry trees that feed silk worms that provide silk thread for weaving.
Now experts want to develop Khon Kaen's silk industry to make the province the "Silk Land of Siam".
According to a report in Krungthep Turakij, an instructor from Khon Kaen University said that the number of families producing silk in Khon Kaen Province dropped from 17,945 in 2000 to 12,395 in 2004, or just 6.2 per cent of all the agricultural households. Nevertheless, the annual income the province has made from the silk industry has risen from just 82.6 million baht in 2000 to 260 million baht in 2004.
In order to further develop the industry, experts recommend that the local and central government support efforts to create a network for silk producers and marketers, invest more in e-commerce, build a modern showroom, and do more to differentiate Khon Kaen's local silk products.
