KANCHEEPURAM: Silk manufacturers in Kancheepuram have demanded a separate trademark for Kancheepuram silk sarees.
In a resolution adopted at a meeting of the Kancheepuram Silk Manufacturers Association on Tuesday, they said that fake sarees were being passed off as Kancheepuram silk sarees and this was affecting the sale of the original.
A special trademark label for Kancheepuram sarees would increase the sales of Kancheepuram sarees, as the consumers would be able to easily identify pure Kancheepuram silk from the rest of the brands flooding the market, they said.
They also wanted certification for the proposed trademark. Another resolution called for silk cooperatives and private manufacturing companies to join hands and form a committee.
They also wanted the committee to be given powers to initiate action against those manufacturing fakes and passing them off as Kancheepuram silk.
The silk manufacturers said that as the silk industry was providing employment to thousands of people, the industry should be protected by the government and the people.
