India : Cotton & silk imports decline

Of the total sensitive items imported by the country, cotton and silk have in particular shown decline at broad group level during the period April-November 2005.

A Commerce Ministry release informs that total import of sensitive items for April-November 2005 was Rs.10756 crores compared to Rs.12452 crores during the corresponding period of 2004.

This showed a 13.6 percent drop.

Gross import of all commodity during same period of current year stood at Rs.373006 crores compared to Rs.298287 crores during the same period of 2004.

Thus import of sensitive items constitute 4.2 percent and 2.9 percent of the gross imports during last year and current year respectively, informs the press release.

The release further states that imports from Argentina, China P RP, Egypt A RP, Germany, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, Cote D’ Ivoire, United Arab Emirates, United States of America etc. have gone up, while those from Indonesia, Malaysia. Brazil, Benin, Japan and Sri Lanka DSR etc. have shown a decrease.
