KANCHEEPURAM: The Silk Mark, a quality assurance label on silk fabrics, has been relaunched here coinciding with the first anniversary of its introduction in Tamil Nadu.

The relaunched silk mark, issued by the Silk Mark Organisation of India (SMOI), an organ of the union textiles ministry, is a price tag printed on fabrics, a high security hologram with information on issue date, authorised seller, etc.

Speaking on the occasion, SMOI chairman H Bhasker said the Silk Mark was similar to Woolmark or Agmark and intended to help consumers identify pure silk. Since its launch last year, 260 members have enlisted as authorised users. Silkmark labelled products worth Rs nine lakh had been sold so far, he said.

He said periodic inspections would be conducted to ensure proper use of the labels by authorised users.

SMOI Chief Executive Vandana Kumar said the mark was akin to the Gold Standards brought about by the Centre to protect consumers.

Authorised users submitted to the prescribed fee structure and it carried special dispensation to cooperatives. The fees were based on turnover of goods and were renewable.

She said the Silk Mark was governed by a council of elected members from among authorised users. This was to get the pulse of the industry and to keep the scheme effective.
Film actress Meena launched the new Silk Mark.
