BANGALORE, DEC 30: Silk Mark Organisation of India (SMOI) is planning to bring all Indian silk products under its Silk Mark label by 2010, according to SMOI’s chief executive officer, Vandana Kumar.
Silk Mark is a government-authorised label that assures customers about the quality and purity of silk products. Central Silk Board (CSB), ministry of textiles and the Central government sponsors the silk mark scheme, which was launched a year ago in a bid to check counterfeit silk products.
The SMOI has an innovative labeling method consisting of a paper tag affixed with a high security e-beam hologram having concealed features for maximum security. The scheme has started gaining momentum this year as the importers in the countries including the US, Spain and Portugal have started insisting for silk mark product, Ms Kumar told FE.
The SMOI’s silk mark trial echoed in the recent 20th Congress of the International Sericulture Commission as the several international participants have closed deals with the Indian silk firms exporting Silk Mark labeled products.
She said, “In a short span of time, SMOI has enrolled more than 325 members and distributed over 11 lakh labels across the country.” SMOI scheme, which has been serving in Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and Mumbai, is expected to hit the silk markets in Kolkatta, Varanasi and Delhi in the near future. The SMOI has also launched a separate website recently to promote the ‘Silk Mark’ at the international level.
