MYSORE: Central Silk Board chairman H Hanumanthappa has said that India should produce an additional 10,000 metric tonnes of silk to do away with import of silk from China.

Speaking at Reshme Krishi Mela on Saturday, he said that the government had to import silk from foreign countries due to deficit in the domestic production.

He said there is need to shift to bi-voltine silk production as it has good demand in the domestic and overseas markets.

Observing that the North Karnataka region has started producing best bi-voltine silk, he said the Silk Board has decided to extend major benefits to farmers involved in producing bi-voltine cocoons.

He further announced the board plans to organise district Reshme Krishi Melas at Chitradurga, Bijapur, Bagalkote and Chamrajnagar and other districts in Karnataka.

SERICULTURE UNDER AGRICULTURE DEPT: Hanumanthappa said there is need to bring sericulture under the purview of the Agriculture Department.

He said the farmers have been given loans at minimum rate of interest, compensation for crop loss and drip irrigation and other facilities.

However, the same benefits are denied to sericulturists, falling under the Textile Ministry, he added.

He favoured amendment to the Seed Act.

He clarified that the amendment would help sericulturists in the state.

He said that the Draft Silk Policy prepared by the Board is to be cleared by the Planning Commission and other bodies.

Union Minister M.V. Rajashekaran said the Center would spend Rs 1.74,000 cr on Bharath Nirman programme in the next four years to irrigate 2,30,000 acres in the country.

He said that these programmes would help in maintaining quality of soil and fertility of land. He appealed to researchers, education and private organisations to educate the farmers.

He said that the National Rural Employment Programme which has begun with Rs 10,000 cr would be increased to Rs 38,000 cr and Rs 1 lakh cr would be spent on urban renewal plan.

MP C H Vijayshanker, Sericulture Development Commissioner Arvind Jannu, CSTRI Director S B Dandin and others also spoke on the occasion.
