North Karnataka (NK) has achieved a good yield in silk and silk yarns and excelled in silk farming and its trading, informed President of Central Silk Board (CSB), Hanumanthappa.

Addressing the local media, Hanumanthappa said that in the past, Malbari yield used to be 87 kg per acre, but today, farmers get more than 100 kg.

Earlier, about 100 eggs of silkworms yielded 60 kgs of silk, and now the volume of yield has reached 85 kg.

This is not just an increase in quantity but also in quality and productivity, added the President.

The region has also done well in research and technology and doubled its silk yarn production from 20 kg to 40 Kg per acre.

Increased production of silk has lowered Indian imports of silk from 9700 tons to 7700. China is the major exporter of silk, stated the President.
