DHAKA--Two development programs of 1.15 billion taka (16.4 million U.S. dollars) have been undertaken for fiscal year 2006-07 (July 2006-June 2007) in a bid to promote sericulture sector in Bangladesh, local daily The Financial Express reported Sunday.

According to the Bangladesh Sericulture Board (BSB), steps have been taken to encourage the silkworm and silk cocoon growers for achieving self-reliance through self employment programs and to accelerate production of silk yarn and fabrics across the country.

There are 11 sericulture zones in the country. Rangpur, Thakurgaon and Bogra zones in northwestern Bangladesh, involving nearly 6,000 families in silkworm farming, are three of the country's 11 sericulture zones.

About 120,000 kg of silk cocoons are being nurtured every year on 3,000 acres (1,200 hectares) of land in the three zones.

At least 12 tons of raw silk are being produced in these zones every year with huge prospects, BSB officials said.

Silkworm farming has a bright prospect in Bangladesh, BSB Rangpur zone Deputy Director Md Abu Taher said, adding that the government has ensured all necessary facilities including easy term loans, supply of quality silk cocoon and marketing of silk for this purpose.

There are real possibilities of earning huge amounts of foreign exchange by exporting silk fabrics to the global market, he said. Enditem
