CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu-based silk traders should compete with their counterparts in other States in exporting more products, Union Minister of State for Textiles E.V.K.S. Elangovan said on Monday.
Recently, a function was organised by the Silk Export Promotion Council in New Delhi, and about 60 persons were given prizes for export performance. Of them, only one was from Chennai, he said.

Mr. Elangovan was addressing a function to mark the conclusion of the Silk Mark Festival organised by the Silk Mark Organisation of India (SMOI), a body under the Central Silk Board.
He called for greater co-ordination between the Central Silk Board, a statutory body, and his Ministry.
Regretting that he was not informed about the Board's activities, he said being an elected representative, he had to face the people and respond to their concerns.
Mr. Elangovan, who distributed prizes to silk traders at the function, said the `Silk Mark' label, launched by the SMOI two years ago, was an identifiable "quality assurance label."
Identification of `Silk Mark' products was easy as they carried a paper tag and certificate from the manufacturer, assuring consumers about the genuineness of the silk.
N. Ram, Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu , called for cooperation between India and China in the promotion of silk products.
He wanted the media to create awareness about the SMOI's quality assurance initiative. Also, resource backing from the Centre, the industry and various other players was required for promoting the `Silk Mark' movement.
H. Basker, SMOI chairman, wanted traders to display the `Silk Mark' prominently in advertisements.
Vandana Kumar, SMOI chief executive officer, said about 400 members had been enrolled under the initiative, and 14 lakh `Silk Mark'-labelled products sold.
