BANGALORE: The Sericulture College at Chintamani in Kolar district, the only such college in Asia, has invited applications for the four-year B.Sc. course (eight semesters).
College principal Andani Gowda told presspersons here on Monday that students who appeared for the Common Entrance Test (CET) conducted by CET Cell during 2004-05, 2005-06 or 2006-07 and had passed the pre-university examination were eligible for admission. The last date for admissions is September 18. The intake for the course is 26, but only four students have been admitted so far.
Dr. Gowda said eligible students could avail themselves of merit scholarship, general scholarship, Jindal scholarship, student aid or freeships.
Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students were eligible for Government of India scholarships and free hostel facilities, he said.
The college comes under the jurisdiction of the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Bangalore, and its campus is situated at Silvi-Horti, 72 km from Bangalore. It also offers a two-year M.Sc. course.
The B.Sc. course fee is Rs. 9,588 for general candidates, Rs. 5,158 for Other Backward Class candidates and Rs. 2,688 for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates.
Dr. Gowda said 180 students who passed out from the college were employed in the State Sericulture Department, five each in the Karnataka Sericulture Research and Development Institute and the Central Sericultural Research and Training Institute and 15 in the UAS, 20 in the Commercial Tax Department, 15 in nationalised banks, 50 in non-governmental organisations and 25 were engaged in the sericulture business.
