New Delhi: The enactment of the Central Silk Board Amendment Bill now means that those not adhering to silkworm seed standards could be punished.

Traditionally, sericulture has flourished in the country under regulated trade regime with restrictions on imports and exports the Act also intends to control the unauthorised production and trade.

The Act empowers customs officials to inspect export and import consignments.

The legislation streamlining the working of the Central Silk Board has come into effect since September 14.

Under the Act, a mechanism would be created to regulate silkworm seed trade under the direction of the Central Silk Board.

The Act is intended to ensure quality standards for production of silkworm seeds, restrict the output of seeds of only the authorized variety.

It would also prevent the entry of untested hybrids from other countries.

In recent years, globalisation has necessitated certain measures to regulate the production, supply, distribution, trade and commerce in silkworm seeds.
