India’s silk export earning rose 9.7 percent to Rs3,158.16 crore from last year’s figure of Rs2,879 crore crossing the target of Rs2,800 crore set by Textile Ministry, according to statistics released by Central Silk Board (CSB).

India’s silk products are divided into four broad categories such as readymade garments, silk carpets, silk waste and natural silk yarn, fabrics, made-ups.

Top five importing countries of Indian silk, which accounted for 58.1 percent share of total silk export earnings are the US, Italy, Germany, Spain and UK.

This whopping growth has surprised CSB as cheap Chinese silk had dominated the global silk market.

But the rising demand of Indian readymade silk garments has boosted the exports of silk, CSB official stated.

Readymade garment products export grew 55 percent to Rs1,157 crore, while yarn, fabrics made-ups segment registered a drop of 6 percent to Rs1,886 crore in the fiscal year 2005-06.

Silk waste export reported earning of Rs19.67 crore from meager Rs1.29 crore in last year.

On the other hand, exporters are not happy this year as Government has imposed anti-dumping duty on import of Chinese silk imports.
