India: Import of sensetive items up

Import of sensitive items has increased by 10.6% to Rs 2,792 crores during April-May 2006 as compared to Rs 2,524 crores during the corresponding period last year. While import of edible oil, fruits & vegetables (including nuts), cotton & silk, products of SSI, rubber, automobiles, marble & granite and milk & milk products went up, imports of spices, tea & coffee and alcoholic beverages declined.
Import of sensitive items constituted 2.8% of India’s overall merchandise imports during the first two months of the current fiscal as compared to 2.4% during April-May 2005, according to an official statement issued here on Monday.

In the edible oil segment, the imports increased to Rs 1,590 crores during April-May 2006 as compared to Rs 1,244 crores during the corresponding period of the previous year. While import of crude oil has gone up by 41.6%, refined oil imports declined by 46.7%. The growth in edible oil import is mainly due to significant increase in import of soyabean oil and its fractions, which has gone up by 103% and Crude Palm Oil and its fractions which has gone up by 14%.
Imports of sensitive items from Indonesia, Argentina, the US, China, Sri Lanka, Cote D’ Ivory, Germany, Japan, Australia, Afghanistan TIS etc. have gone up while those from Malaysia. Brazil, Egypt, Benin, Vietnam have shown a decrease.

The gross import of all commodities during same period of the current year was Rs.1,16,523 crores as compared to Rs.91,595 crores during the corresponding period of last year.
