HYDERABAD: The Chinese technological interference is underway, at a unit being setup in Jangaon of Warangal district, to improve the processing of cocoons and produce fine spun silk, Ms C.S. Rama Lakshmi, commissioner of sericulture (Andhra Pradesh) said here on November 12.

The unit being setup by an entrepreneur, Mr Ravinder will get Rs 2.5-crore for automatic reeling machine from China.

She informed that the state sericulture department and the central silk board (CSB) have extended financial support to the tune of Rs 1 crore, while the rest has to be raised to set up the facility.

However, the facility would have the capacity to process 700 kg of cocoon a day; whereas the material would be sourced from nearby districts, as well as the coastal districts of East & West Godavari, Krishna etc.

Another, Bangalore-based company Indo Silk is also planning to setup a spun mill with an investment of Rs 2 crore. The CSB and the AP Government are also supporting the project.

The unit would have the capacity to convert 100 tons of cocoon into spun silk. Eri variety of silk, which is becoming popular in the state districts, would be the focus.
