KANGRA VALLEY: The state government has been approached by regional silk produces to request for providing funds so as to improve the quality of silk production, industry sources said here on December 07.
Sources informed that in the absence of a proper market for small silk units, silk producers face tough competition from their big counterparts due to the monopoly prevalent in the market.
Further small units in the region feel that if state government does not come up with alternatives for them to reap benefits, they will perish as currently the quality is not comparable with China's.
The sericulture industry in state has the potential to raise the income levels of small and marginal farmers, landless people, the educated unemployed feel that more silk production units need to be established to generate employment.
Further, if more small silk units are opened, then it will help to generate more employment opportunities in the region, while silk weavers feels that competing with China, the world's largest producer of silk, is possible provided loopholes are removed.
The country has the world's largest market for silk products, and therefore something needs to be done on the pricing front.
The state has 8275 silk cocoon farmers and about 4, 93,094 kgs of green silk cocoons are produced; whereas department of sericulture officials, however, claim that the quality of silk and cocoons has improved over the years.
The department also informed that in the last ten years, the quality of silk and cocoon has improved and the production in the past five years has also increased.
