Women aged over 60 years can hand over old silk saris to showrooms

CHENNAI: The century-old artistic and traditional designs of silk saris will be revived under an innovative programme of Cooptex.

Under the programme, `connecting generations', women citizens aged over 60 years can hand over their old silk saris to the nearest Cooptex showrooms. These saris will be examined by a committee of experts, and the designs selected will be taken up for production. A gift coupon worth Rs.2, 000 will be given to the selected designs, which can be exchanged for cloth in any showroom. The last date for handing over saris is December 31, and the selection will be over before Pongal.

Lunching the programme here on Tuesday, Handlooms and Textiles Minister N.K.K.P. Raja said the aim was to preserve the traditional designs of the previous generation and present them to the new generation in trendy designs.

For the forthcoming wedding season, Cooptex launched "Potramarai" silk saris, created by the country's leading designers. These saris are available in different designs and colour combinations, and their price tags range from Rs. 2,100 to Rs.18, 000.

The Minister said the `Mayil Thogai' silk saris produced in 1.64 lakh natural colours by Cooptex received tremendous support from customers; so far orders had received for 11 saris, including two each from the United States and Dubai. Each sari would cost Rs. 40,000.

Cooptex will also tap the readymade shirt segment in a big way. Encouraged by good response during Deepavali, it has decided to introduce shirts in different sizes in attractive colours in the price range of Rs.200 to Rs 215 for the Pongal season.
