China’s Silk products Import and Export Situation in Jan.-Jul. 2020

From January to July, the total import and export value of China’s pure silk products was 760 million US dollars, a year-on-year decrease of 35.57%, accounting for 0.44% of China’s total textile and apparel imports and exports.

1.Export situation:

The export value of pure silk products was 633 million US dollars, a year-on-year decrease of 39.01%, accounting for 0.4% of China's textile and apparel exports. During the same period, the export value of textile and apparel increased by 4.83% year-on-year (the same below).

1.1Export products structure

The decline in exports of the three major categories continued to expand. From January to July, export value of silk filament decreased by 31.94%,accounting for 25.82%, and meanwhile its quantity dropped by 35.94% with whose unit price accelerating by 6.24%; pure silk fabrics decreased by 43.76% on its export value, accounting for 24.6%, with the unit price of which dropped by 13.21%, and meanwhile silk filament fell by 39.74%, accounting for 49.58% with whose unit price up by 8.52%.

1.2Major export markets

The decline in exports of pure silk products to Europe and the United States continued to increase slightly, and the five top markets of which exceeded 30%. The top five markets were: EU (down 31.73%, accounting for 28.55%), USA (down 35.53%, accounting for 19.36%), India (down 47.62%, accounting for 8.15%), Japan (down 32.42%, accounting for 7.86%), Hong Kong (down 39.55%, accounting for 7.83%).

1) Export situation of silk filament markets

The decline in silk filament exports to India expanded to 46%, while exports to Madagascar maintained a surge. The top five rankings were: EU (down 18.42%, accounting for 34.95%), India (down 46.57%, accounting for 23.69%), Japan (down 36.38%, accounting for 11.57%), ASEAN (down 48.91%, accounting for 8.68%), Madagascar (an increase of more than 1000%, accounting for 5.55%).

2) Export situation of silk fabrics markets

The exports of pure silk fabrics to major markets generally declined, and ASEAN surpassed Hong Kong to rank second in our pure silk fabrics export market. The top five countries and regions were: EU (down 44.02%, accounting for 28.19%), ASEAN (down 20.88%, accounting for 11.57%), Hong Kong (down 38.86%, accounting for 11.39%), India (down 50.92%, accounting for 8.05%), South Korea (down 42.27%, accounting for 7.33%).

3)Export situation of silk madeups

The major export markets for silk madeups were ranked stably, and the decline in exports has generally expanded, especially the exports to European and American markets. The top five countries and regions were: USA (down 34.63%, accounting for 36.3%), EU (down 31.45%, accounting for 25.4%), Hong Kong (down 41.09%, accounting for 9.76%), Japan (down 27.82%, accounting for 7.66%), Australia (down 25.57%, accounting for 3.63%).

1.3 Export situation of provinces and municipalities

The rankings of major export provinces and municipalities remained stable, and the decline in Guangdong Province continued to expand, reaching 52%. The rankings of major provinces and municipalities were: Zhejiang (down 42.1%, accounting for 37.44%), Jiangsu (down 32.26% , accounting for 17.06%), Guangdong (down 52.45%, accounting for 12.19%), Shanghai (down 20.03%, accounting for 10.12%), Shandong (down 33.27%, accounting for 6.46%). The total exports of the top 5 provinces and municipalities accounted for 83.27% of the country's total exports.

1.4 Trade method

Exports under general trade accounted for more than 90%. General trade exports were 581 million US dollars, a decrease of 37.87%, accounting for 91.67%; other trade exports were 5.173 million US dollars, a decrease of 88.49%, accounting for 0.82%.

2.Import situation

From January to July, the import value of pure silk products was 126 million US dollars, a decrease of 10.18%, accounting for 0.97% of textile and apparel imports. In the same period, textile and apparel imports fell by 9.99% .

2.1 Import products structure

The decline in the imports of three categories continued to narrow. The import value of silk filament accounting for 9.97%, decreased by 2.93%, and increased by 10.02% on its import quantity, and the unit price of which dropped by 11.77%; the imports of pure silk fabrics fell by 33.64%, accounting for 8.36%, and its unit price surged  18.83%; Imports of silk madeups decreased by 7.87%, accounting for 81.5% with whose unit price up by 12.5% .

2.2 Import situation of sources

The decline in imports of silk products from the European Union continued to narrow. Meanwhile Japan ranked fifth among China's sources of pure silk imports, and Uzbekistan dropped from fourth to sixth. The top five import sources of pure silk products were: EU (down 7.21%, accounting for 72.61%), People's Republic of China (down 26.94%, accounting for 8.93%), India (down 3.34%, accounting for 5.66% ), ASEAN (up 5.52%, accounting for 2.14%), Japan (up 22.9%, accounting for 2.07%).    

2.3 Export situation of provinces and municipalities

The rankings of major import provinces and municipalities remains stable, and the decline in the import value of silk products from Shanghai, which ranked first, continued to narrow. The details were as follows: Shanghai (down 2.49%, accounting for 76.01%), Guangdong (down 38.56%, accounting for 6.03%), Zhejiang (down 15.71%, accounting for 5.33%), Beijing (down 55.29%, accounting for 3.38%), Jiangsu (down 28.53%, accounting for 1.82%). The top five provinces and municipalities accounted for 92.57% of the country's total imports.
