China’s Silk Product Imports in January 2022

In January, the import value of silk products was 37.731 million US dollars, an increase of 23.34% year-on-year, accounting for 1.73% of the import value of textiles and apparel. In the same period, the import value of textiles and apparel fell by 9.20% year-on-year.

1. The structure of import products

Imports of silk filament and silk madeups increased significantly, of which the imports of silk filament increased by 157% year-on-year, and silk fabrics fell by 41% . Silk filament imports of 7.5614 million US dollars, an increase of 49.20% YOY, accounting for 20.04%, import quantity of 957.82 tons, an increase of 42.77%, import unit price of 7.89 US dollars / kg, an increase of 4.50%; silk fabrics imports of 1.5302 million US dollars, an increase of 63.50%, accounting for 4.06%, import unit price of 13.46 US dollars / meter, an increase of 4.91%; Imports of silk madeups were 28.6394 million US dollars, an increase of 75.90% YOY, accounting for 16.48%.

2. Import sources

China’s import growth rate of European Union, the largest source of silk products  declined, imports from North Korea continued to grow, and North Korea became the second largest source of silk product imports, accounting for 15%. Imports from India and Uzbekistan fell sharply year-on-year.

The top five sources of silk product imports were: the EU (up 22.23%, accounting for 71.63%), North Korea (--%, accounting for 14.81%), China (up 23.97%, accounting for 4.97%), India (down 55.99%, accounting for 2.92%), Uzbekistan (down 76.37%, accounting for 1.41%).  

3. Export situation of provinces and municipalities

In January, imports of silk products in Liaoning Province surged, with a year-on-year increase of 80672%, jumping from the ninth place in 2021 to the second place. The details were as follows: Shanghai (up 23.52%, accounting for 70.38%), Liaoning (up 80672.33%, accounting for 15.0%), Zhejiang (down 52.10%, accounting for 4.17%), Guangdong (down 11.58%, accounting for 2.94%), Hainan (down 10.97%, accounting for 2.42%). The total imports of the top 5 provinces and municipalities accounted for 94.91% of the total national imports.
