China’s Silk Product Imports and Exports in Jan.-Apr. 2022

1. The import and export situation of silk products in April    

According to China Customs statistics, the total import and export value of silk products was 154 million US dollars of China, a year-on-year increase of 18.95%. Among them, the export value was 127 million dollars, rising 9.11% and 37.78% from the previous month and year respectively; the import value was 27 million dollars, falling 15.77% and 27.49% from the previous month and year respectively. The specific details are as follows:

Export situation: the amount of silk filament was 36.049 million dollars, rising  94.56% from the last year (the same below), and the quantity of which was 664.23 tons, rising 50.81%; the amount of silk fabrics was 36.9538 million dollars, rising 40.05%; the silk madeups was 54.1659 million dollars, falling 14.31%。

Import situation: the amount of silk filament was 6.2466 million dollars, growing  1.88%, and the quantity of which was 449.67 tons, dropping 25.42%; the amount of silk fabrics was 1.5065 million dollars, dropping 24.15%; the silk madeups was 19.3777 million dollars, dropping 33.87%。

2. The import and export situation of silk products in Jan.-Apr.

From January to April, the total import and export value of silk products was 631 million dollars, up 21.93%, accounting for 0.6% of Chinas total textile and apparel imports and exports.

2.1 Export situation

The export value of pure silk products was 508 million US dollars , a year-on-year increase of 32.93%, accounting for 0.54% of China's textile and apparel exports. During the same period, the export value of textile and apparel increased by 13.8%.

2.1.1 Export product structure

From January to April, the exports of the three categories had risen in different degrees, in which the export growth of silk filament and silk fabrics expanded over 50%, that is mainly due to the small base of last year and the export value in the first four months of this year had not yet reached the level of the same period in 2019.

From January to April, the export value of silk filament was 131 million dollars, jumping 52.57%, accounting for 25.85%, and the quantity of which was 2391.47 tons, growing 19.47%, with its export unit price of 54.92 dollars per kilo, up 27.67%; silk fabrics amounted to 159 million dollars, growing 59.66%, accounting for 31.37%, with its export unit price of 5.95 dollars per meter, growing 16.44%; the exports of silk madeups totaled 217 million dollars, growing 10.72%, accounting for 42.78%.


2.1.2 Major export markets

The export of silk products to Europe, the United States and India markets increased significantly year-on-year, with an increase of 46.44% to the European Union, India more than doubled, and exports to Japan were basically flat. Compared with the same period last year, the market share of the European Union increased by about 2.5%, and the United States fell by 2%.



1) Export situation of Silk filament

In addition to the negative growth in exports to the United States, the top ten major markets for silk product exports had increased to varying degrees, among which the ASEAN countries of Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar had more than doubled their growth rates. The market share of the European Union and India increased by 5% and 10% respectively, while Japan's share fell by 1.5%.


2) Export situation of Silk fabrics

Silk fabrics had increased to varying degrees in the top ten export markets, doubling exports to the European Union and more than tripling exports to Afghanistan and Vietnam. Compared with the same period last year, the EU market share increased by nearly 7%, Pakistan fell slightly, and India and Sri Lanka increased by 1%-2 %.


3) Export situation of silk madeups

From January to April, the export of silk products to Japan, Britain and South Korea declined, and other major markets increased by different margins, among which Cambodia grew greatly, becoming the tenth major market of silk exports. The market share of the United States, the European Union and Hong Kong had increased slightly, no more than 3%, and Japan's share had declined by 3%.


2.1.3 Export situation of provinces and municipalities

Except for Qinghai Province, the main export provinces and municipalities of silk products had generally increased, among which Hunan, Guangxi and Liaoning had increased significantly. The export share of Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Guangdong increased slightly, and Shandong and Shanghai decreased slightly.

2.2 Import situation

From January to April, the import value of silk products was 123 million dollars, down 9.06% year-on-year, accounting for 1.13% of textiles and apparel. In the same period, the import value of textiles and apparel fell by 9.67% year-on-year.

2.2.1 Import structure

The three major categories had experienced different declines, with a slight decline in silk filament and silk fabrics, and silk madeups falling by about 10%. The import value of silk filament was 19.1197 million dollars, dropping 0.09%, accounting for 15.5%, the quantity of which amounted to 1920.4 tons, dropping 16.7%, and the unit price of which jumped by 20% to 9.96 dollars per kilo; the import of pure silk fabrics was 5.2818 million dollars, decreasing 9.34%, accounting for 4.28%, and the unit price of which jumped 34.47% to 15.79 dollars per meter; Imports of silk madeups fell 10.59% to 98.9452 million dollars, accounting for 80.22%.

2.2.2 Import situation of sources

Chinas imports of silk products from the EU continued to decline, North Korea increased net year-on-year, Morocco and Myanmar increased significantly, Japan increased by 4%, and other countries declined to varying degrees. The EU is the most important source of silk product imports in China, accounting for 3/4 of the total, but the share from January to April this year fell by 2% compared with the same period last year.

2.2.3 Import situation of provinces and municipalities

From January to April, among the provinces and municipalities where China's silk products were imported, Liaoning grew sharply ranking third and Yunnan saw net growth ranking fifth, Sichuan increased by 93%, and the rest had different declines. Shanghai was the main force in Chinas silk imports, accounting for 3/4 of the import share.
