China’s Silk Product Imports and Exports in Jan.-Jun. 2022

1.The import and export situation of silk products in June

According to China Customs statistics, the total import and export value of silk products was 205 million US dollars (the same below) of China, a year-on-year increase of 33.59%. Among them, the export value was 169 million dollars, rising 4.92% and 71.67% from the previous month and year respectively; the import value was 36 million dollars, rising 64.5% and falling 16.64% from the previous month and year respectively. The specific details were as follows:

Export situation: the amount of silk filament was 51.9335 million dollars, surging  107.2% from the last year (the same below), and the quantity of which was 979.31 tons, rising 84.16%; the amount of silk fabrics was 42.9427 million dollars, rising 51.97%; the silk madeups amounted to 74.562 million dollars, rising 29.86%。

Import situation: the amount of silk filament was 2.803 million dollars, dropping  53.44%, and the quantity of which was 286.9 tons, dropping 49.08%; the amount of silk fabrics was 1.1692 million dollars, dropping 29.02%; the silk madeups amounted to 31.7179 million dollars, dropping 9.76%。

2.The import and export situation of silk products in Jan.-Jun.

From January to June, the total import and export value of silk products was 1020 million dollars, up 27.76%, accounting for 0.59% of China’s total textile and apparel imports and exports.

2.1Export situation

The export value of pure silk products was 839 million US dollars , a year-on-year increase of 42.92%, accounting for 0.54% of China's textile and apparel exports. During the same period, the export value of textile and apparel increased by 16.16%.

2.1.1Export product structure

The exports of the three categories had risen in different degrees in the first half of 2022. Among the three categories, the export growth of silk filament and silk fabrics expanded over 50%, that is mainly due to last year’s low base and the export value in the first six months of this year had not yet reached the level of the same period in 2019, but the gap was narrowed to nearly 30 million dollars.

From January to June, the export value of silk filament was 244 million dollars, jumping 89.2%, accounting for 29.07%, and the quantity of which was 4508.85 tons, growing 53.6%, with export unit price of 54.1 dollars/kilo, up 23.18%; silk fabrics amounted to 243 million dollars, growing 58.54%, accounting for 28.96%, with export unit price of 5.85 dollars/meter, up 7.93%; the exports of silk madeups totaled 352 million dollars, growing 15.5%, accounting for 41.97%.

2.1.2Major export markets

The export of silk products to the Indian and Vietnamese markets increased significantly, with an increase of more than 200%, to the European Union and Pakistan markets increased by a larger year-on-year rate, 50% and 80% respectively, and to the United States and Japanese markets increased less than the overall growth rate of silk product exports. Compared with the same period last year, the market share of the 27 EU countries increased by 1.5%, and the United States fell by 4%.



1)Export situation of Silk filament

Among the top ten major markets for silk filament exports, in addition to the negative growth of exports to the United States, others had different degrees of growth, of which India, Vietnam, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Cambodia increased more than the overall growth rate of silk exports. India’s market share increased by 17%, while the share of the European Union and Japan fell by 8% and 4% respectively.

2)Export situation of Silk fabrics

Silk fabrics increased to varying degrees in the top ten export markets, doubling to the European Union and Indian markets, and soaring greatly to Afghanistan and Vietnam. Compared with the same period last year, the EU’s market share increased by 6%, Pakistan’s and Sri Lanka’s went up 1%, and India’s share grew 2.5%.

3)Export situation of silk madeups

From January to June, the export of silk madeups to Japan, the United Kingdom and South Korea declined, and to other major markets increased by different margins, among which the growth rate of the largest export market the United States was basically the same as the whole, and Malaysia and Singapore surged nearly 100%. The market share of the United States was basically the same as that of the same period last year, the share of the European Union and Hong Kong, China increased nearly 2%, and the share of Japan fell by 2%.

2.1.3Export situation of provinces and municipalities

The main export provinces and municipalities of silk products generally increased, among which Hunan, Guangxi and Liaoning increased greatly, and Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Guangdong and Sichuan increased more than the overall growth rate of the whole country. Zhejiang’s export share of silk products increased by 3%, and Jiangsu and Guangdong got a slight increase of 0.5% respectively compared with the same period last year.

2.2Import situation

From January to June, the import value of silk products was 181 million dollars, down 14.4% year-on-year, accounting for 1.09% of textiles and apparel. In the same period, the import value of textiles and apparel fell by 7.97%.

2.2.1 Import structure

The three categories saw different decline, among which the decline in silk fabrics and silk madeups was larger than the overall decline in silk products. The import value of silk filament was 26.4752 million dollars, dropping 5.99%, accounting for 14.65%, the quantity of which amounted to 2565.08 tons, dropping 18.78%, and the unit price of which jumped by 15.7% to 10.32 dollars/kilo; the import of pure silk fabrics was 7.7222 million dollars, decreasing 18.23%, accounting for 4.27%, and the unit price of which jumped 19.97% to 15.32 dollars/meter; imports of silk madeups fell 15.55% to 147 million dollars, accounting for 81.08%.

2.2.2Import situation of sources

China’s silk products imported from North Korea showed net growth year-on-year, from Morocco increased by nearly 300%, from Myanmar surged, and from the European Union, India, Japan and other countries or regions declined to varying degrees. The EU was the most important source of silk imports of China, accounting for nearly 3/4, but its share fell by nearly 2% in the first half of this year compared with the same period last year.

2.2.3 Import situation of provinces and municipalities

From January to June, among the provinces and municipalities that imported silk products in China, Liaoning and Yunnan ranked third and fifth respectively relying on the large growth, Fujian increased by 56%, and the rest declined to varying degrees. Shanghai was the main force in China’s silk imports, accounting for 3/4 of the total import share, which was nearly 2% lower than the same period last year.
